By Cathy Collar

One night while sleeping in my bed
I turned and looked and overhead
What a nice surprise to see
A fairy dancing over me !

When I asked the reason why.
She said , “ Come with me and fly.
Come and see through fairy’s eyes,
A place unknown to many wise.

Where Johnny Jump Ups jump up high,
And dance and play in the sky.
Each buttercup is filled with butter,
Fairies drinking as they flutter.

Look closely on each fairy’s feet
Are Lady Slippers bright and neat.
Their gowns are made of Silver Lace.
The Sunflowers light their dancing place.”

I danced all night in Fairyland,
With other fairies hand in hand.
I listened, looked, laughed and sang,
My feet were bare, but felt no pain.

As sunlight warmed my shinning face,
I awoke from Fairyplace.
I thought that it had been a dream,
Even though how real it all had seemed.

As I climbed out of my bed,
And shook the sleep from my head,
On the floor by my bare feet,
Lay a Lady Slipper, bright and neat.

A Special Gift

A Special Gift

 By Cathy Collar

The softly glowing orb floated through the dark, silent night.  Her light rivaled that of the moon.  She was told she could not go.  Could not make this trip from heaven to Earth.  She was too young, too newly an angel, but in her heart she knew she had to come.  It would be her first Christmas away from her earthly family and she must be there.  They had to know that she was all right. That she was happy and a part of her would always be with them.  The new angel wasn’t sure how she was going to accomplish this, but she was determined and with the help of God, he would help her, he’d understand, she would find a way.
She floated looking for any sign that she was in the right place.  Her journey had disoriented her a bit and she really wasn’t accustomed to her new form.  The frozen ground reflected her glow, lighting her way through the brisk night. She did not feel the cold.  The glowing warmth that God had bestowed upon her filled her whole being.
There it was, her earthly home.  No Christmas lights outside this year.  The sight saddened her a little.  Her mother loved Christmas and always decorated the house and yard with thousands of brilliant lights. The Nativity Scene hadn’t even been set out.  But she understood why.  Her family really didn’t feel the Christmas joy this year because they were missing her.
Determined to let them know that she was gloriously happy, she slipped into the house.  A dream vision would be the easiest way to talk to them.  Her grandpa’s sister, Shellia had passed at the tender age of nine.  She had become the new angel’s very special friend and taught her a few simple angel tricks, how to pass through walls and not knock yourself out in the process, how to make things glow and how to enter a dream.  The new angel said a silent prayer.  Please God help me get this right.  Her inner glow grew a little warmer.  She smiled.  He was with her on her quest.
She floated to her parent’s bedroom.  The sadness and grief almost knocked her down.  She must fight her way past this.  She had been warned this would be her biggest enemy in getting through to them.
“It will be all right.  I am with you.  I will give you the strength you need.”
The voice softly blended with her whole being.  Fortified, she bolted forward, through the fog of despair that barred the entry into the room.
First, would be her mom.  She would be easier to reach.  Her mind was open to the thought that her daughter would contact her in some way.  Her mom had prayed for it.  The new angel pausing studied her mother’s face.  Dark circles appeared under her eyes, evidence of unending tears that had been shed.  Yes, this was the right thing to do.  She must vanish the doubt in her mother’s mind.  Softly she hovered over her mom’s heart.  She had already planned the dream that would be implanted there.  Her thought formed and pushed its way gently in, a glowing white angel with feathery wings, basking in a brilliant light and her smiling face looking into her mother’s eyes.  The young angel watched as her mother’s grief lifted a little and a smile spread on her lips.
She drifted to her dad.  She knew he would be more difficult.  He was trying so hard to be the strong one.  As always, he thought he had to be the rock for all to lean on.  She felt his enormous pain.  He held inside all of his suffering and grief.  It was so vast.  She knew she had to push her way past and find the soft spot underneath.  Try as she might, her thoughts would not break through.  What would she do now?  The soft, calm voice was back.
“You must enter his heart.  I will help you.”
With a surge of light, the new angel battled through the hard shield her father and built.  Thump, thump, she was in!  She had thought about his dream very carefully.  It had to be simple, yet strong enough for him to believe.  The thought formed.  A blue sky covered with dark clouds.  The clouds represented her fears and problems on earth.  Now the clouds would part to a blazing sun, her bright new world.  He was a being of nature and would understand this dreams’ meaning.  Struggling back through the shield, she forced her way out.   She watched as his face transformed from tension and strain into a state of satisfied calmness.
Hovering above her parents, she soaked in their love.  She hated to go, but her work here was done.  If she stayed any longer, it would be harder for them to move on.
“I will visit you often,” she whispered drifting out of the room.
She paused at the sight of the familiar Christmas tree standing in its usual spot in the living room.  She took in all of the homemade ornaments and twinkling lights.  Her eyes followed them to the top, where she knew the beautiful Christmas Angel would stand.  Oh no!  Something was wrong.  The Christmas Angel's candles, held in her hands were not lit!  This just wouldn’t do!
“Here is my Christmas present to all of you,” she said.  The candles began to glow then blossomed into a brilliant light. “Merry Christmas!  I love you all dearly!”
Floating back to heaven, the new angel felt a great worry lift from her soul.  She knew her message had gotten through.  Now she must move on to her new life.

Katie McCory (Panic In the Attic)

 Panic in Grams’ Attic
By Cathy Collar

Halloween night had finally arrived. Katie stole a quick glance at the Knight in the unusual stained glass window in their Grandmas’ attic.  She saw nothing different than the many times she had looked at it before.  The golden knight sat proudly on his pearl white horse, his golden lance stately pointed toward the deep blue sky.  She was still perplexed by her unusual dream. Hopefully it had been just that, only a dream.  It really wouldn’t matter as long as she got all of them out of the attic before midnight.
The Halloween Party was going pretty well so far.  Her brother, Billy had spent every spare minute in the attic preparing for the party.  He had set an old wooden table in one corner of the room and surrounded it by four rather rickety wooden chairs.  In the middle of the table was a weird shaped object covered in a velvet cloth.   In another corner, yellow eyes from a fake skull glued to an old candelabra glowed on Tarot cards that were spread on a small round gypsy’s table.  Two lopsided overstuffed chairs sat opposite each other awaiting their occupants.  Billy had placed candles everywhere giving the attic an eerie glow.
The four kids moved over to the large, wooden table.  Billy, the mystic, sat at one end.  Donnie was seated at the other end, with the two girls, Ariel and Katie in between.  Billy yanked the velvet cloth off. There in the middle of the table stood an old lamp globe glowing blue from a glow stick Billy had taped inside.  He moved the ball closer causing an eerie shadow on his face.  Pushing his turban out of his eyes, and flinging his purple cape off of his shoulders, he pressed his eyebrows together and stared into the ball.
“Ahhhhh,” he said,  “I’ve seen a vision.”  Billy placed the ball back on the table. “Everyone now concentrate. I am only the medium here.  I will need your help.”
“You need a lot more help than we can give you.”  Katie laughed.  “Have you ever thought of acting lessons?”
Billy shot an annoyed look at Katie, then continued.  “Spirit who dwells in the ball, come out, come out, show one, show all!”
“I feel a strange being in the room, a cold current,” Billy continued.  “Make your presence known to us, oh spirit!” he shouted, causing the girls to jump in their seats.
“Okay, maybe you don’t need acting lessons,” said Ariel, settling back into her chair.
Katie giggled and stole a quick glance at Donnie.  He was so handsome, it was a shame his features were hidden in the darkness.  Donnie hadn’t said a word since the séance had begun.  He was probably wishing he hadn’t come. She knew he would rather be in town right now hanging out with his friends instead of being stuck in this attic with them. He would not have come if his sister, Ariel, hadn’t begged him.
“Donnie, are you possessed? Katie chided. You’re being awful quiet.”
Donnie didn’t move.  Katie looked closer, she still couldn’t see his face.  Shoving her chair away from the table, she stomped over to Donnie’s seat.  She had her hands on her hips and was about to tell him that he could just leave right now if he thought he was too cool to hang out with them, then she heard Grams’ grandfather clock strike the last dong of midnight.  Oh! No!  She had completely forgotten about her dream.  She stopped suddenly and looked at Donnie’s face.  His charcoal eyes were staring at something.  Katie followed their path to the stained glass window.  There she gasped in disbelief.  The stained glass window had come to life!  The green knight had turned to face them.  His white horse’s eyes were blazing red.  His lance now pointed directly at the old, crusted chest that Katie had discovered earlier that week in the attic.  A shimmering beam shot from the lance encompassing the chest with a golden ray and giving it a lustrous radiant glow. The chest levitated then shook, causing the crusted edges to sail through the air.  Soon it glistened like a precious jewel.  The knight slowly lowered it back to the floor then lifting his lance upright he turned his horse back to its original position.  The light faded from the window and the room was now lit only by the glowing amber of the chest.
Ariel and Billy were also staring at the sight.  Katie yelled at them to follow her downstairs.  They all continued to stare at the chest.  She grabbed Donnie’s arm and pleaded for him to come with her, but Donnie didn’t budge. She ran to Billy and Ariel and tried to push them toward the door.  It was as if their feet were cemented to the attic floor.  Then looking at their transfixed eyes, Katie realized it was too late.
Warily, her eyes turned toward the beautiful chest, a large hairy brown hand grabbed the side.  Katie held her breath.  What on earth was that?  Another gross hand followed the first.  Gnarled brown fingers with long curved claws now held onto the  glowing chest.  Katie gasped.  Her dream had been real and now because of her they were all doomed.  Should she put her faith, and their lives into a message sent to her in her a dream? Did she really have a choice?

Katie McCory (The Moonlight Visitor)

The Moonlight Visitor
By Cathy Collar
A mist was swirling around Katie’s feet as she stood in the exotic, emerald forest. Her satiny gown brushed across the soft pine needles as she turned to survey her surroundings. The fog, slipping around the trees caressed her like a warm blanket.  An echo crept through the fog, Katie, Katie come to me…  She didn’t recognize the voice but for some reason she trusted it.  A silver bird lit on her shoulder then flew slightly ahead, beckoning her to follow with its beautiful song.  Without thinking, her feet were moving, carrying her on in pursuit of the shiny bird and toward the mysterious voice.
The bird fluttered ahead and for a moment was lost in the fog.  As Katie paused, the fog began to gather itself and transform into slivery glow.  Slowly the glow took form. Long, black hair floated about a pale, delicate face.  Huge, dark eyes twinkled with starlight beneath the ebony hair.  The woman’s silvery gown swirled around her petite body as if caught in a breeze, but there was no breeze.  Katie was mesmerized.  Then she was terrified!  Was this a nix?  Was she about to become a gross, bloated victim of this devious water fairy? She turned to run but her feet were stuck firmly to the ground.
The woman spreading delicate wings glided over to Katie.  Then she spoke.  “Hello Katie,” She said. ” I have been waiting for you.”
Katie’s mind started working again..  “Okay,” she said to herself. “This is not real
It is only a dream and you can’t drown in a dream.  You just need to wake up!
“Ah yes, this is a dream,” said the woman, “But I cannot allow you to wake up. Not just yet. I am a Moon Fairy and I am called Luna.  Right now I am visiting you in a dream.  I have been sent to give you a message.”
A Moon Fairy, awesome, thought Katie grateful not to be facing a Nix.
“I know you must have a million questions,” said Luna.” but right now we don’t have the time, for if I don’t hurry I will be stranded here and all hope for our worlds will be lost.  The moon fairy now stood directly in front of Katie.  She looked deep into Katie’s eyes.  “Katie, you must listen to me and heed my words, for they are very important, to your world and mine.
Katie tensed.  She felt as if those starry eyes had seen deep, down into her soul.
We must send you into Fairyland on a very dangerous quest. Inside the golden  chest in the attic resides your guide.  At midnight on the morrow, the chest will open.”  Luna placed a slender hand on Katie’s shoulder.  “You must be in the attic, at midnight, for it is the only safe way to enter Fairyland.  Be there, Katie.  We are all depending on you.”
As the moon fairy spoke, her voice drifted away. Katie was back in the fog.  She heard Grams calling her name and opened her eyes to see her grandmother’s concerned face leaning over her.
“I called three times for you to come down to breakfast.  I got worried when you didn’t answer, but as I see now, you were too tired to even change out of your gown last night.  Well, I think you’re rested now, so come on down.  I’ve kept your breakfast warm.”
Katie rubbed the sleep out of her eyes.  It had just been a dream.  She smiled back at her grandmother.
“It was a wonderful night, Grams?”  she said yawning.  “I wish it could have lasted forever!”
“As a girls first ball should be.” Grams said. “Now clean up and come  downstairs.
Katie slipped out of her gown.  Her hands were smoothing the delicate fabric, when she noticed a silver spot on the shoulder.  Oh No! Surely she hadn’t spilled something on it at the ball?  She wouldn’t be able to live with herself if she had ruined the beautiful dress.  She looked closer at the spot, frowning.  She didn’t remember eating anything silver last night.  As she squinted, the spot seemed to move.  It got larger and larger.  Soon, it resembled a silver bird.  Katie gasped backing quickly away.  It looked just like the bird in her dream, but it couldn’t be!  That had been just a dream, developed from a fantastic night of fantasy.  It wasn’t real... or was it?  She continued to look at the bird.  It puffed out its feathers as if being inflated, then hopped off of the dress and onto Katie’s hand.  It had a silver parchment in its beak.  The bird winked at Katie, dropped the note into her hand, and then singing its magical melody, disappeared before her eyes.  Katie sat awe struck.  What was happening to her?  Maybe she was still asleep.  She pinched herself on the arm.  Ow!  No, she was definitely awake.  She opened the delicate parchment.  Inside in an elaborate handwriting, of ebony ink, was a message:

Katie, Katie hark and hear
Your Fairy Friends now need you near.
On morrow night the time is right
for you must help us with our plight.
The key resides within the chest
To start you on your destined quest.
Katie dear be true, be true,
Faite of Our Worlds depends on you!

Katie started to read the note again but before she could, it vanished in a puff of
silvery smoke.  Oh my, thought Katie!  That wasn’t just an ordinary dream!  The moon fairy had visited her and then sent a messenger to make Katie realize it had been real.  Now what was she supposed to do?  The fate of her world and Fairyland was in her hands? How could she not go?
“What’s keeping you, Katie?”  Grams called from the kitchen.  “Your pancakes will soon be cold as Jack Frost’s whiskers.”
And what would Grams do when she found her gone?

Life is like a balloon.
It has it’s highs.
It has it’s lows.
We just have to learn to go with the flow.

Take one day at a time. Ride the highs,
Soar in the sky,
Float on the clouds, as they sail by.

Feel the sun hot on your face.
Enjoy what is there.
Have not a care.
Breath the fresh air.

What  about  the lows?
The lows are time to ponder why.
To ask yourself, “ Who am I?”
To wonder if life is passing you by.

Ask questions that have no answers.
What is God’s plan, for beast and man?
Answer the questions as best you can.

Life is like a balloon.
Enjoy the highs.
Make use of the lows.
Through it all your perception grows.
